The Morning Routine

Time is a strange thing, isn’t it? Somehow we can feel like we have so much of it and at the same time, too little. But who controls who? I know—especially in a world that’s becoming more and more entrepreneurial—that no one will put structure to my day besides me. A career as an entrepreneur grants you the liberty to be in charge of your own hours. This means that your habits and your routine will become your competitive edge.

After much reading and practice, I believe that the following formula creates the perfect morning routine:
  1. Drink something: Water, tea, coffee – whatever you like. Dehydration is one of the main reasons why people feel tired. Ideally, eat something as well. A healthy breakfast to boost the metabolism works well to help maintain healthy muscles and burn calories.
  2. Activate your muscles: This can be as simple as 20 push-ups or as involved as a full workout, but it needs to happen. Circulate blood to your brain and body and you’ll feel awake pretty quickly.
  3. Read: Learn something. Your mind is a muscle and it needs to be worked out. Blogs are great for this because they come right to your inbox. Sign up for one now! You can subscribe to our blog for weekly posts (if you’re not signed up already), and for daily reads: Seth Godin is a good starter.
  4. Meditate: Meditation should not be intimidating. There are plenty of guided meditations available online. There are also tons of free apps. Personally, I like Headspace. Almost ALL leaders and top-performers meditate to start their day. Take 10 minutes and make it a habit.
  5. Feed your soul: For me, this means reading the Bible. Your soul needs to be fed. You need a purpose greater than just consuming for another day. Without this, what are you doing this routine for?

Finally, remember that a new morning routine won’t become a regular habit overnight. The best way to start is to add parts to your current routine. Tie new habits to old habits. For example, I put my daily self-affirmations on my laptop computer so that I always am reminded to read them before I read my emails.

Start adding bits to your morning routine until you find a combination that works for you. It’s been one of the most valuable decisions I have made as an entrepreneur.
